A Continuous 13.3-Ka Paleoseismic Record Constrains Major Earthquake Recurrence in the Longmen Shan Collision Zone

چکیده

Thrust collision zones with low slip rates along the plate boundary are significant areas of stress accumulation and prone to develop more destructive earthquakes longer recurrence intervals. Such regions often classified as seismic risk if they lack continuous records large earthquakes, such eastern Tibetan Plateau before 2008 M w 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake. Here, we provide a record in Longmen Shan thrust fault zone spanning 13,000 years based on detailed investigation soft-sediment deformation structures seismites Lixian lacustrine sequence. The time ( ? 8.1) is 1,200 years, which significantly shorter than previous estimate 2,000–6,000 years. Maoxian-Wenchuan main that triggered sediments. In addition, earthquake warm period frequent cold period, should arouse our attention for study tectonically active regions.

Estimation of Recurrence Interval of Large Earthquakes on the Central Longmen Shan Fault Zone Based on Seismic Moment Accumulation/Release Model

Recurrence interval of large earthquake on an active fault zone is an important parameter in assessing seismic hazard. The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (Mw 7.9) occurred on the central Longmen Shan fault zone and ruptured the Yingxiu-Beichuan fault (YBF) and the Guanxian-Jiangyou fault (GJF). However, there is a considerable discrepancy among recurrence intervals of large earthquake in preseismic a...

Deep slip rates along the Longmen Shan fault zone estimated from repeating microearthquakes

[1] We investigated deep slip rates along the Longmen Shan fault zone where the devastating 2008 M7.9 Wenchuan earthquake occurred using repeating earthquake data recorded by two digital seismic networks near the fault. Using cross‐correlation analysis of waveform data, we identified a total of 231 doublets and 224 multiplets that have highly similar waveforms. Most of these sequences are aperi...

Rapid slip-deficit rates at the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau prior to the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake

The Longmen Shan is the steepest topographic front at the India-Asia collision zone and the site of the Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake. Here to explain the interseismic GPS velocities across the greater Longmen Shan region, we develop a boundary element model including earthquake cycle effects, topography, the westward dipping Beichuan Fault and a ∼20 km deep, shallowly dipping, detachment, inferre...

Earthquake recurrence as a record breaking process

We extend the notion of waiting times for a point process to recurrent events in space-time. Earthquake B is a recurrence of a previous one, A, if no intervening earthquake happens after A and before B in the spatial disc centered on A with radius AB. The cascade of recurrent events, where each later recurrence to an event is closer in space than all previous ones, forms a sequence of records. ...

Monte Carlo method for determining earthquake recurrence parameters from short paleoseismic catalogs: Example calculations for California

[1] Paleoearthquake observations often lack enough events at a given site to directly define a probability density function (PDF) for earthquake recurrence. Sites with fewer than 10–15 intervals do not provide enough information to reliably determine the shape of the PDF using standard maximum-likelihood techniques (e.g., Ellsworth et al., 1999). In this paper I present a method that attempts t...
